This ballet is is loosely based on Italo Calvino’s “Six Memos for the Next Millenium,” and its five lectures on lightness, quickness, exactitude, visibility, and multiplicity. Mr. Calvino looks, through the lens of literature, at the qualities he deemed most valuable for the next generation. I approach them through the lens of movement, driven by the notion that artistic impulse is interchangeable across media.

The creation of this work was made possible through a space allowance by the Joffrey Dance Center in Queens, NY.

This ballet was commissioned by Norte Maar in 2016 for CounterPointe 4:

a program pairing women choreographers with women visual artists to create collaborative dance works.

Choreographer Eryn Renee Young worked with artist Amanda Browder to create a three-part ballet with a cast of eight dancers. The set is a fabric-based sculpture that was originally installed on a building in Greenpoint Brooklyn. All the fabric was donated by people from the Brooklyn area and was sewn during three public sewing days. The costumes are an original design for this ballet and are made to integrate the fluidity of the dancers with the geometric characteristic of the colorful backdrop.
